The Vintrust SOMMselections have been vetted by our team of Sommeliers: tasted, rated, notated, and offered directly to you. Who better to advise us on which wines to offer to our clients?

Ray Coursen was working in restaurants on Cape Cod in 1983 and dreaming of making wine in California. He took the plunge. With stints at Mount Eden Vineyards, Tonella Vineyard Management and Whitehall Lane, Ray learned to prune, trellis, train in the vineyards. He learned the art of fermentation and aging in the winery. With this extensive knowledge and experience, Ray started Elyse Winery in 1987, named after his daughter. His first wine was 286 cases of Zinfandel from Napa Valley’s famed Morisoli Vineyard, which continues to be a primary source of fruit for Elyse Winery. In 1997, Ray purchased a small winery on Hoffman Lane to make the wines.

Not wanting to leave his son, Jake, out of loop, he began a new label in 1988 named after him: Jacob Franklin. Ray has always been fortunate to gain access to some extremely limited, incredible Petite Sirah fruit from highly desirable vineyards. But the fruit is hard to come by and it is very low in yield. Consequently, the wines are very limited and they sell out quickly. These wines are usually available only through the winery, but Vintrust is pleased to be able to offer these astonishing wines.

WINE DETAILS AND SOMMscores

SOMMscores:  Vintrust has put a new spin on the traditional 100-point rating system. Rather than simply display the final number, as so many publishers do, SOMMscores have been designed to provide transparency to each wine review. Each SOMMscore isolates the five characteristics that often make up a wine’s rating and prescribes a number of points for the related descriptor, which add up to total score of 100 – Aroma (15 points), Flavor (15 points), Structure (15 points), Length (15 points) and Balance (40 points). This is the criteria our Sommeliers use when reviewing wine. For a list of our SOMMelier partners, please click here.

Made from a blend of grapes (Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Valdiguié, Barbera, Carígnane, Grenache, Syrah, Grand Noir, and Alicante Bouchet, this is a delightful Rosé. A small portion of juice is bled off (“saignee”) the chilled must. The juice is then allowed to ferment naturally to dryness in older barrels. This Rosé is made in the style of the wonderful rosés of Tavel and Livac.

The Tietjen Vineyard is in the heart of the Rutherford Bench. The Cabernet Sauvignon from this vineyard produces juice that is deep in color with heavy fruit extracts. The wines it produces have flavors of ripe cassis, cherry and wild berries. Wonderful intoxicating aromas of sweet red fruits, and intense cassis notes intermingle with smoke, dark earth and a hint of vanilla. Full-bodied and quite attractive with a solid core of tannins, this lovely Cabernet is delicious now but will continue to improve over the next decade and a half.

The vineyard is located between Niebaum Lane and Manley Lane 0.7 miles west of Route 29 in the heart of Rutherford Bench. This is the twelfth year that Elyse has produced a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from this extraordinary vineyard site. Intense aromas of red cherry, smoke, dark, dusty earth and a lovely note of gravelly mineral all translate directly onto the full-bodied palate. Great texture of tannins ensures a long life ahead of this elegant wine.

The majority of the fruit for this dense, massive Petite Sirah is produced on the Wood Vineyard, located in the heart of the Rutherford Bench. Like a massive bear paw, this wine grabs and lifts you. Huge aromas of black and blue fruits, dark chocolate, coffee, smoke, oak, stone and tar. The palate is beyond full-bodied and laden with fruit, oak, spice, and cola. The length is permeating and will make you think about the experience for days.
